Preliminary Research

After last meeting, we finally settled on touchscreen gloves although there were many good ideas. Initially, we wanted to make solar powered iPhone charger however when we looked into buying the parts thee time it took for them to be delivered where debatable. Although they were cheap the shipping time was 20-30 days we could not risk them coming in late because if they did come in in 30 days we would have had to do the entire project within 1 day.

When we first started researching this concept we did not know how touchscreen gloves worked. After a very quick google search, we determined that the screen uses the conductivity of our fingertips to transmit an electrical signal to the screen. The cheapest conductive material that every household probably has is aluminum foil. For our first prototype we will probably use aluminum foil as the conductive material.

We settled with the touch screen glove idea. Since winter is approaching, many people are going to wear gloves to keep their hands warm and many gloves are not touch screen sensitatve. This causes an inconvenience to people as they have to remove their gloves in order to use their phone. Therefore we opted to solve this problem by making a glove that is touch screen sensative to eliminate this inconvenience. We started by using aluminum foil first since aluminum is conductive. We thought this might work and to our surprise it worked a little. However it was extremely glitchy and it was not ideal to use. We then decided on the next best alternative, conductive thread and ordered a spool on Amazon Prime.

Prototype 2 Created on October 27

After the first prototype, we realized that the aluminum foil was clunky and not very effective. We agreed we will need some other kind of conductive material. We then chose to use conductive threading to make it so that the glove maintains it's flexibility. This was a major issue with the first prototype since we think the crinkly ridges formed by the aluminum foil may have been the reason why its so glitchy. For the second design we sewed the conductive threading through the fingertip and used the threading itself as the conductor. This produced much better results.
